Experience Our World-Renowned Mississippi River

Let’s start by acknowledging that this is one big, bad river. The Mississippi River is the 4th longest river in the world and the 2nd longest river in North America. Did you know our section of the river actually-flows East to West in the Quad Cities? Just one of the many fun facts about the Quad Cities.

The river is 2,341 miles of power and beauty and it is vital to our existence. It is a barge highway, water well, and recreational space. The upper Mississippi generates over $250 billion in commerce each year and the entire length of the river generates over $400 billion. Barges and their tows move approximately 175 million tons of freight each year on the Mississippi through a system of 29 locks and dams. It also supports more than 750,000 manufacturing, agriculture and tourism jobs in 60 counties directly adjacent to the waterway.

The QC made its home on the banks of the river for manufacturing, commerce, and transportation. It is a true economic development engine. Agricultural products and huge agribusiness industries reign along the Mississippi River basin and produce 92% of the nation’s agricultural exports, 78% of the world's exports in feed, grains, and soybeans, and most of the livestock and hogs produced nationally.

Our river is an important recreational resource for our boaters, canoeists, hunters, anglers, and birdwatchers. And, it offers many outdoor opportunities, whether on the water or admiring its strength from our riverfront biking and walking trails, our bluffs and parks, and our riverfront festivals and events. Our Quad Cities bridges offer an upfront view of the Mississippi, and some unique history of their own too.

We invite you to get out and explore our world-renowned Mississippi River. Check out our favorite things to do on the Mississippi River, below, and come adventure with us!
